We are incredibly proud that our parishioner Bernie Boardman has successfully completed the AJ Bell Great Manchester Half Marathon in support of Caritas Salford.
On 31st May, Bernie took on the challenge together with Paula Crosland and a wider team of Caritas supporters, running an incredible 13.1 miles through Manchester city centre.
Together, they have raised vital funds to support the frontline work of our diocesan charity, helping to ensure that help remains available to those who need it most.
A Passion for Community
Bernie, who is well-known to many of us for his work in the parish, has long been a champion for Caritas. Speaking to the Caritas Salford team about his motivation, he said:
“It’s great the way Caritas looks out for people who are in need, be it financial, homelessness, supporting families with education… nobody is exempt from help.”
He emphasises that while the physical challenge of the half marathon was significant, it was a small sacrifice compared to the hardships faced by those Caritas supports daily.

“A Small Piece of the Jigsaw”
For Bernie, the most rewarding aspect of this experience was realising that the fundraising wasn’t just about a race—it was about a collective contribution to a much larger goal.
“It is very rewarding to know that your small piece of the jigsaw is helping complete the bigger picture to help others,” Bernie explained.
A Heartfelt Thank You
A huge thank you to everyone in our parish who supported Bernie and Paula through sponsorship, donations and prayers. Your generosity ensures that Caritas can continue to provide hope, dignity, and essential services—from food and shelter to crisis support—to the most vulnerable members of our community across Greater Manchester and Lancashire.
